Cloister Garden in the North Courtyard

Before the museum was established in 2003, the cloister garden was the heart of the monastery building and part of the enclosed area. Surrounded by the enclosing cloister, it served the nuns as a place of retreat and silent prayer. In monasteries, cloister gardens symbolize the Garden of Paradise. As a sign of eternity, a circular fountain is often found there.

Kitchen Garden in the South Courtyard

Located near the current kitchen, the kitchen garden in the south courtyard includes cold frames, a greenhouse, and a herb spiral. The plants and herbs grown there provide the kitchen with fresh and organic ingredients for the meals of the sisters and their guests. Every year on the anniversary of Charlemagne’s death, the sisters of Müstair gather here in remembrance before the wall painting of the Frankish king.

Upper Monastery Garden

North of the monastery, adjacent to the Plantaturm, lies the Upper Monastery Garden. In addition to fruit trees and berry bushes, large beds of vegetables and salad greens are cultivated here. These homegrown products are also served in meals for the nuns and their guests.

Flower Garden and Apple Garden in the West Courtyard

In the west courtyard, in front of the monastery gate, a flower garden welcomes visitors. It is lovingly tended by Sister Lutgarde and the monastery gardeners, Dietmar and Iris.
