SAVAIR Centre at the Benedictine Convent of St John at Müstair UNESCO World Heritage Site
The 1250-year-old abbey complex in Müstair is the most important early mediaeval archaeological excavation and building research site in Europe. For over 50 years, thanks to the Stiftung Pro Kloster St. Johann foundation, the abbey complex has been systematically researched and restored.
The new SAVAIR centre (‘savair’ is Romansh for ‘knowledge’) is intended to provide a forum for publicising and communicating the findings of 50 years of archaeology, monument preservation, restoration, building culture and architectural history around the monastery complex.
The SAVAIR centre has set itself the following goals:
- To operate a centre to publicise and communicate the findings of archaeology, conservation, restoration, building culture and architectural history around the monastery complex (know-how transfer)
- To impart scientific and technical restoration techniques (know-how transfer)
- To organise and hold scientific events in archaeology, monument conservation, restoration, building culture and architectural history
- To organise and hold training in craft restoration techniques
- To help educational establishments hold scientific events (project weeks, etc.) in Müstair
- To exchange experience and cooperate with other World Heritage Sites with a Carolingian connection for the purpose of publicising and communicating findings and research results
