Twelve centuries of the convent, architectural and art history

The museum gives you a sense of the nuns and their spirit. Within the historic walls of the former cloister you’ll take a journey through the centuries to see extraordinary art treasures and unexpected traces of everyday life.

Convent museum

The convent museum is located in the Planta Tower, a thousand-year-old place of residence and refuge. Take a guided tour through 1,250 years of the convent, art and architectural history. The Benedictine nuns of Müstair give you an insight into their convent and their life then and now.

Museum visit

Your visit to the museum takes you into the cloister, then on to the mighty cellar of the Planta Tower and the three upper floors to experience a ‘convent within a convent. You will enter reception and living rooms, bedchambers and prayer rooms as well as graceful high-raftered parlour from the Baroque period.. Convent Church and Chapel of the Holy Cross

The convent church was originally reserved for the convent itself. Now it serves as a parish church and place of worship for all believers.

Convent Church and Chapel of the Holy Cross

The convent church is home to the world's largest and best-preserved cycle of frescoes from the early Middle Ages. Carolingian and Romanesque paintings adorn the walls and the three apses. The paintings depict the life of King David from the Old Testament, the childhood, ministry and suffering of Jesus, and the ascension and second coming of Christ. The apses are dedicated to saints and martyrs: St John the Baptist, St Stephen, St Peter and St Paul.
