What is our mission?

We want to make the Benedictine Convent of St John at Müstair an experience for our visitors.

About us

Our work isn’t just a job. We love what we do. Our aim is to bring the convent and all its treasures in their entirety to visitors while respecting the nuns’ need for peace and seclusion. It’s an honour to preserve, study and publicise the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our team: who’s behind it?

We’re a team of archaeologists, restorers, conservators, art historians, guides, shop assistants and administrative staff who endeavour every day to ensure that visitors to the convent and museum feel comfortable.

About the team

We have been working for the Benedictine Convent of St John at Müstair since 1969

Our activities and goals

In our endeavour to bring together the convent and people with a particular affinity with our cultural heritage, in 1998 we founded the Friends of Benedictine Convent of St John at Müstair. It has around 450 members.

About the Friends

We are dependent on financial support to maintain and protect this unique and extensive cultural heritage.

A mediaeval model with a future

The term ‘Bauhütte’ (builders’ hut or church masons’ guild) originates from the Middle Ages when craftsmen joined forces to tackle large building projects.

Various institutions are involved in the ‘guild’. At the centre is the monastic community in its capacity as the owner and user of the site. The foundation takes care of restoration and construction work with private donations and public subsidies. The archaeological research accompanying the construction work is sponsored by the Graubünden Archaeological Service and supported by other institutions on a project-by-project basis.
