Bun viadi. Paths to and from Müstair

Seemingly remote, Convent of St. John is located at Switzerland’s easternmost border, about 120 kilometers and two mountain passes from the canton’s capital, Chur.

However, when looking at historical objects and pre-modern life, this assumption is challenged. Through significant artifacts, the exhibition traces the monastery’s connections and networks from the Middle Ages to modern times, revealing surprising links. A hermit Madonna, for example, testifies to the close relationship between two monasteries around 1700, while archaeological findings of pilgrimage souvenirs from Santiago de Compostela and Rome illustrate distances of up to 7,000 kilometers being bridged.
