“Far from home, I celebrated my first Christmas in the quiet little monastery. Here, one can truly celebrate Christmas in the spirit of the Church. Midnight Mass is held here. Think of the sacrifices the mountain dwellers make—walking for hours to reach the church! We city folk have no idea. It is already bitterly cold here…”
Since June 24, the baroque nuns' cells in the Plantaturm’s upper floor focus on the inner life of Müstair’s sisters. Through moving video sequences, they recount their journeys and lives within the monastery and its enclosure. Objects and narratives in this new exhibition center around themes of intimacy, privacy, and the acts of keeping and locking away. These include small chests and trunks as personal possessions, as well as letters, such as one written by Gertrude Werner in 1913 during her first year in the monastery to her loved ones.
