Planta Tower built: oldest fortified residential tower in Europe

Fortified tower as protection against raids

In mid-10th century barbarian raids threatened the empire of Otto I. The Chur diocese was also ravaged by Saracens in around 940. In this context Bishop Hartpert had a strong fortified tower built to the north of the church in 960 to protect his people and the monks.

Its interior was arranged as living quarters. Today the tower is named after Abbess Angelina Planta who rebuilt the interior after the fire in 1499. Since 2003 the building houses the convent museum.
