The term “Bauhütte” (literally translated = building hut) dates from the Middle Ages; the “Bauhütte” brought craftsmen together, in order to manage larger building projects. Today’s equivalent is the ‘building site office’. As in the old days this collaboration is an ideal formula for the present and future management of maintenance and restoration of a living cultural monument such as the Convent of St. John in Müstair. The monastic community, the Pro Kloster St. Johann in Müstair Foundation, the archaeological department and the cultural heritage department of canton Grisons all work closely together in the Convent of St. John in Müstair.
Several institutions participate in the Bauhütte. The primary participant is of course the monastic community, as owner and user of the complex. With the contribution of private sponsors and public subsidies the Foundation manages the restoration and structural work. Archaeological research, which runs alongside building work, is the responsibility of the archaeological department of canton Grisons, with certain projects being supported by other institutions.
The staff who work in the Bauhütte have to be flexible, always keeping an eye on the complex as a whole. The greatest advantage of this coordination centre is its efficiency. Workflow is straightforward; synergies are used and internal communication works well. Coordination of activities can be dealt with speedily and competently.
Since February 2004 there has been a Bauhütte in Müstair that is responsible for the maintenance of the convent complex. This organisational model is able to cover current needs and has the necessary flexibility to be able to react to changing requirements.
The Bauhütte is a coordination centre and synchronises various functions and assignments; this covers a wide range that includes research, documenting and archiving, long-term planning, building management, restoration, maintenance, accounting, management of the Pro Kloster St. Johann in Müstair Foundation, as well as communication and public relations.
